Broadstone

Broadstone opened in 1847 with the Dorchester – Southampton Railway. It had very few station buildings but 4 large platforms.

The goods yard, a common site with most stations in the 1900s, was closed in 1965 along with many other parts of the network. This was most likely part of a cost cutting scheme after WWII.

The Somerset & Dorset branch line (shown on map at previous page as “Line to Templecombe”) started at Broadstone. The embankment which the line used to be on can be found when driving into Broadstone from Creekmore.

Broadstone station had a bridge with covered roof. Broadstone also had a signal box until 1970, this was removed when the line was reduced to a single track before being completely closed.
